How it's filled

In plain words
Elected by the Riksdag
Exact method
Elected by the Riksdag. The Speaker proposes a candidate after consulting party leaders; the proposal is put to the Riksdag and the candidate is elected unless more than half of its members (175) vote against (Instrument of Government ch. 6 ss. 3-4). Since the 13 September 2026 election no vote has yet been held: the Prime Minister has asked to be relieved and his government is serving until a new Prime Minister is elected.
