What it can do
- Adopt laws
The National Assembly is the legislature: rights and duties of citizens may be determined only by law (Constitution Art. 87), adopted by a majority of votes cast unless the Constitution requires another majority (Art. 86). Laws may be proposed by the Government, any deputy or 5,000 voters (Art. 88).
- Elect the Prime Minister and appoint ministers
Elects the President of the Government on the proposal of the President of the Republic (Art. 111) and appoints and dismisses ministers on the proposal of the Prime Minister (Art. 112); the Government is accountable to it (Art. 110).
- Parliamentary inquiries
May order parliamentary inquiries on matters of public importance (Constitution Art. 93).
