What it can do

  • Legislate on matters taken over under self-government

    Inatsisartut legislates (Inatsisartutlov) on the fields of responsibility Greenland has taken over from Denmark. Foreign and security policy, defence, the currency, the Supreme Court and citizenship remain with the Danish Realm. Basis: Act on Greenland Self-Government (Act no. 473 of 12 June 2009).

  • Decide on independence

    Under section 21 of the Act on Greenland Self-Government (Act no. 473 of 12 June 2009), a decision on independence is taken by the Greenlandic people, after negotiation with the Danish Government and with the consent of the Folketing.
