What it can do

  • Legislative power

    The legislative function is exercised collectively by the two Chambers (Constitution Art. 70).

  • Budget and state accounts

    The Chambers approve the budget and the final accounts presented by the Government each year (Constitution Art. 81).

  • Authorise treaties and declare war

    The Chambers authorise ratification of treaties of a political nature (Art. 80) and decide the state of war, conferring the necessary powers on the Government (Art. 78).
