What it's for
A school board delivers education programming to meet the needs of all students enrolled in its schools, and is accountable to students, parents, the community and the minister for student achievement.
Education Act, s. 33 · Applies to every Alberta school board
What it can't do
It must deliver the courses and programs of study prescribed, approved or authorized under the Education Act, and any other programming it offers must be impartial, fair and neutral.
Education Act, s. 33(1) · Applies to every Alberta school board
Who it answers to
Trustees are elected every four years under the Local Authorities Election Act. The minister can appoint an official trustee to run the board if it does not comply with a ministerial order or if the minister considers it in the public interest, and the elected members then leave office.
Local Authorities Election Act, s. 10; Education Act, s. 72 · Applies to every Alberta school board
Where its money comes from
Funded by the province, including through the Alberta School Foundation Fund, into which education property taxes are paid. A separate school board can opt out of the Fund and requisition its taxes directly from municipalities.
Education Act, ss. 160, 164, 165 and 166 · Applies to every Alberta school board
Shares responsibility with
