What it can do
- Solid waste disposal
Provides solid waste disposal for its members, a mandatory common service (Regional Service Delivery Act, SNB 2012, c. 37, s. 4(2)(a)).
- Regional transportation
Provides or facilitates a regional transportation service, a common service (s. 4(2)(b)).
- Land use planning
Provides land use planning, development and building permit services to member local governments that do not have their own planning service and to the rural district (s. 4(2)(c), s. 25).
- Regional strategy and development
Develops and carries out a regional strategy on economic development, community development, tourism promotion, transportation and infrastructure, and shares the cost of regional sport, recreation and cultural facilities among its members (s. 3.1, 3.2).
- Public safety committee
Runs a public safety committee where members share information and plan jointly on policing, fire protection and emergency measures (s. 3.1(1)(e)).
- Fees and budget
Adopts a budget and charges its members and other users fees for its services; it cannot levy taxes (s. 8(h), 27-28).
