- What it's for
-
A regional district board provides services that the board considers necessary or desirable for all or part of the region, including services shared by several municipalities and services for rural electoral areas. The law describes regional districts as an independent, responsible and accountable order of government.
Local Government Act, ss. 185 and 332 · Applies to every BC regional district board
- What it can't do
-
Each new service needs an establishing bylaw approved by the province's Inspector of Municipalities and by the voters, or the councils, of the areas that will pay for it. The board can act only within the region unless a law allows otherwise.
Local Government Act, ss. 195 and 342 · Applies to every BC regional district board
- Who it answers to
-
The board is made up of directors appointed by each member municipality's council from among its members, and directors elected by the voters of each electoral area every four years. Each member's votes depend on its population.
Local Government Act, ss. 52, 196 and 198 · Applies to every BC regional district board
- Where its money comes from
-
The cost of each service is recovered from the areas that take part in it, through property value taxes, parcel taxes, fees and charges, and grants. Municipalities collect the regional district's taxes from their residents, and the province collects them in electoral areas.
